Richard was born and raised in the small town of LaGrangeville which is located in the Hudson Valley near Poughkeepsie, New York (pronounced Po-kip-see).
From Little League Baseball, Pop Warner Football, C.Y.O. Basketball to pickup games of pond ice hockey and lettering in high school football, basketball, track and cross-country, sports played a large part of his life growing up. The more sports that he played, the more his love of sports grew. After receiving a Regents Diploma from Arlington High School, he attended Marist College majoring in English Communications, which is now known as Sports Journalism.
In 1974, he married his lovely wife, Emily, and a job opportunity moved the newlyweds to Lexington, Kentucky. Even though the job didn’t pan out, the Herles’ fell in love with Central Kentucky. In 1976, they bought a home in Nicholasville. There, they raised their daughters, Beckey and Sarah. After a few years in the construction business, Richard started Homeowner’s Helper Company and after 30 years the remodeling business is still going strong today.
The next addition to our family came when Beckey married her husband, Joe. A few years later a baby boy joined our clan. Of course, he is the smartest, handsomest, and most talented boy in the world. Oh by the way, Elijah’s his grandson and he’s not a bit prejudice.
After taking a 20 year break from writing, he jumped back in feet first. Richard covered assorted teams in the AHL for Hockey’s Future, Euroreport, Hockey’s Trade Rumors, and Just Hockey web sites. The initial web site assignments led to articles in assorted newspapers and magazines. Ten years and more than 250 articles later, he has been published in Just Hockey Magazine, the San Jose Sharks Magazine, Big Blue Nation Magazine, Inside Kentucky Magazine, and Lexington Legends Magazine. For the past few years, he has turned his writing toward the children’s market.
